The Informal Settlements Unit (ISU) proudly participated in the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR’s) 11th Annual International Coastal Clean-up Day on Saturday, September 14th, 2024. This event allowed the ISU to contribute to the preservation of TCI’s coastlines while connecting with community stakeholders. Through its involvement, the ISU continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable development and improving the quality of life for residents across the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The clean-up took place at multiple locations across the islands, with volunteers from local communities, businesses, and government organizations joining forces to remove waste and pollutants from the shorelines. Six members of the ISU team participated at the Bight Kid’s Park, Providenciales, where they collected plastic bottles, food packaging, abandoned snorkel gear, and other harmful debris. The ISU team worked alongside other key organizations, including the Red Cross, Experience Turks and Caicos, and Fortis TCI, contributing to the collective effort to clear the coastlines.
The ISU’s participation in this initiative reflects its holistic approach to creating safer, more sustainable communities in the TCI. As part of its mandate to address the challenges of informal settlements, the ISU prioritizes social, legal, and environmental responsibility. By engaging in events like the International Coastal Clean-up Day, the ISU reinforces its commitment to the overall well-being of both the environment and the people of TCI.

Looking ahead, the ISU’s involvement in the clean-up is just one of many community-focused initiatives on the horizon. In the coming weeks, the Unit will launch a Community Engagement Exercise designed to build stronger connections with residents of informal settlements and address their immediate needs, while gathering feedback to shape future development programs.
